Shadow Study

Throughout this project, I experiment with images that I have taken over the course of the semester with the goal of contrasting natural and man made textures and patterns. To do this, I masked the shadows of plants (both located on Scripps' campus) in two different images. I decided to use each image twice but with reversed masking to provide a better sense of cohesiveness throughout the project.

I then inserted samples of man mades textures and patterns. These came from pictures I have taken, scans I created for this class, and digital effects in Photoshop. The images picture fabric samples, scans of jewelry and fabrics, other shadow images, and photos I have taken of other textures that have particularly intrigued me.

 

For each piece, I used 6-10 layers, experimenting with layering of grain, gradients, pixels, as well as tweaking photos using inverted filters, contrast, and warping.

I took inspiration from artists such as Petra Cortright.  Specifically her use of natural imagery and patterns in combination with digital mediums to create colorful, maximalist collages.

Ultimately, this project explores the beauty and tension of combining natural and man made objects and textures, highlighting our everyday interactions with nature in a man-made world.
